PALO ALTO, Calif. - Sophomore Jason Bolinski (Hockessin, Del.) threw his longest outing of the year in the 9.0 inning complete game 8-1 win over UC Riverside in the NCAA Regionals at Stanford's Sunken Diamond. The Spiders (48-14) advance to the Regional final against Stanford, tomorrow, June 1 at 1:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. EDT).
Centerfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) and second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) both went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while senior rightfielder Vito Chiaravalloti's (Middletown, N.J.) 3-for-4, one-run, one-RBI day led Richmond's 14-hit attack.
The Spiders opened the game with four runs on four hits in the first frame. Pritz led off with a single through the left side of the infield. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by UC Riverside's catcher Brian Emmons. During first baseman Jim Fasano's (Horsham, Pa.) at-bat, Pritz scored on a wild pitch and then Fasano worked a walk. Chiaravalloti stroked a single into left field to advance Fasano to second. Catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) continued the scoring run, driving in Fasano and Chiaravalloti on a double down the left field line. Tidball then scored the fourth run of the evening on a David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) RBI-single.
The Highlanders responded to Richmond's 4-0 lead with a lead off double by Brian Wahlbrink. He eventually scored on a Tony Festa groundout.
In the fourth, Richmond added another run for a 5-1 lead. Second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) belted a double to left field. He then advanced to third on Pritz groundout and scored on a consecutive Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) groundout.
Third baseman David Thomas (McLean, Va.) stroked another lead off single in the sixth. LeNoir and Pritz then loaded the bases with back-to-back singles before Zeskind was hit by Highlander pitcher Julio Fernandez to send Thomas home. Chiaravalloti then knocked another single to send LeNoir home for a 7-1 Spider lead.
In the eighth, Pritz scored on a bases-loaded walk to take an 8-1 lead, which the Spiders would hold to advance to the Palo Alto Regional Championship game against Stanford. Bolinski (10-1) allowed only six hits and induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play. He allowed only one run and struck out five in his seventh complete game. UC Riverside's Fernandez (5-4) took the loss after giving up seven runs in 5.1 innings.
