UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- With the 90-degree heat and the long-lasting sunshine, it is hard to imagine the fall creeping toward this scenic campus. When the leaves do change and the cooler winds start to blow, Spider fans will sense another exciting season of college football.
The always difficult Atlantic 10 campaign looms, combined with non-conference games against perennial power Furman and long-time rival VMI, a formidable 11-game slate awaits ninth-year head coach Jim Reid.
The 2003 season kicks off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 against A-10 rival Delaware in Newark. The Spiders blocked a potential game-winning field goal to secure a 15-13 win against the nationally ranked Blue Hens at UR Stadium last fall. This year's opener will give one team an early advantage in the race for a conference crown.
Richmond's offense will be led by senior quarterback Bryson Spinner, a Virginia transfer. Spinner will look to converted wide receiver Stacy Tutt and All-American candidate Boyd Ouden to form one of the most dangerous offensive attacks in recent history.
The Spider defense must replace seven starters from last year's squad. The defensive front of Brian Burnette, Clifton Coker, Jason Houston and Ike Sanni are experienced and the key to stopping the opposition's offense.
