HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Richmond (0-0-1) opened its season with a 1-1 tie against James Madison (1-1-1) in the JMU/Comfort Inn Women's Soccer Tournament Friday evening.
Richmond took an early 1-0 lead when JMU sophomore goalie Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario/Holy Trinity) got a hand on senior Edda Gardarsdottir's (Reykjavik, Iceland/Briedholti) 30-yard free kick to prevent a score. However, Richmond junior Meghan Ogilvie (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) pounced on the rebound and put the ball in the net from three yards out at the 10:03 mark.
Richmond out-shot the Dukes 10-4 in the opening period, but in the second half JMU battled back with a 6-5 shot advantage. The Dukes scored on their first shot of the half when red-shirt junior Christy Metzker (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock) sent a ball through to sophomore Kim Argy (Oak Hill, Va./Chantilly). Argy sped ahead of a Richmond defender and beat senior goalkeeper Megan Cox (Raleigh, N.C./St. Mary's) one-on-one with a shot from 12 yards out.
Both teams had chances to score in the waning minutes of regulation, but a Richmond shot from outside the box in the 84th minute was high, and a wide-open opportunity from outside the box by JMU sophomore Karly Skladany (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) in the 88th minute went over the goal.
In the first 10-minute overtime period, Richmond sophomore Liana Wooten (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) found herself wide open but her shot from 10 yards out hit a defender with under two minutes to play. Argy had two chances in the final minutes but both her lofted shots sailed over the goal. In the second overtime, Cox stopped back-to-back point-blank shots by Argy midway through the period. Wooten then got two shots off in the final four minutes, but the first was high and Hussey made a stop on the second one. Cox had four saves, while Hussey finished with eight saves.
The Spiders will face New Hampshire on Sunday at noon.
