The first half was not pretty as both teams struggled to make a dent on the scoreboard. Xavier, which made just two field goals over the first nine minutes, shot 16 percent from the field in the first half (5-for-31).
Xavier was able to spark a 7-0 run midway through the first half to take an 11-8 lead. That stretch wrapped up with just one field goal * a three pointer by Doellman at 11:42. The Musketeers led by as many as six points, 14-8, with 9:03 left in the half.
Richmond cut the Xavier lead to one, 16-15, at 6:21 before Dobbins quickly converted a basket to bring the Spiders on top, 17-16. Nearly two minutes later, the lead was handed back to the Musketeers courtesy of a Keith Jackson basket at 4:28. Xavier eventually closed out the half with a 21-19 advantage.
Doellman provided the only scoring spark in the first half, leading all players with seven points.
Xavier's shooting improved in the second half as it downed three consecutive 3-pointers to jump out to an eight-point lead, 30-22, over the first two minutes. Lionel Chalmers, Doellman and Sato each contributed a trey.
XU was on top, 36-29, midway through the second before it allowed Richmond to embark on an 11-2 run, which resulted in a 40-38 Spider lead at 7:10. The game remained close throughout the final two minutes, but two free throws each by Patrick O'Malley and Mike Skrocki sealed the Spider victory.
