Football Falls In Season Finale

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The 114th all-time meeting between Richmond and William & Mary was a one-sided affair as the Tribe earned a share of the Atlantic 10 championship with a 38-14 victory against the Spiders before 8,325 fans at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Tribe was led by Payton Award Candidate Lang Campbell who threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns on 21-of-28 passing. Junior running back David Freeman was a bright spot for the visitors, running for 126 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries.
Freeman, who became the first Spider with four 100-yard rushing games in one season since Jasper Pendergrass in 1998, finished the season with an 85.9 yards per game average. He also led the Spiders with six touchdowns in 11 games.
William & Mary struck first on their senior day when Campbell connected with Dominique Thompson on a 25-yard touchdown pass at 7:07 of the first quarter. At 13:24 of the second quarter, Jon Smith capped a seven-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Tribe a 14-0 lead at intermission.
The decisive third quarter began with Campbell's second touchdown toss, 17 yards to Adam Bratton. Three minutes later Campbell was at it again with a five-yard strike to Joe Nicholas.
Another touchdown toss to Adam Bratton at the 3:55 mark and a 44-yard field goal from Greg Kuehn put William & Mary in front 38-0.
The Spiders scored twice in the final 5:37 to complete the scoring. Freeman sliced through the Tribe defense for a 16-yard touchdown two plays after linebacker Lance Gray had forced a fumble that he recovered at the Tribe 38.
With just five seconds remaining, junior quarterback John Richardson threw his first career touchdown pass, to senior Lewis Little who was playing in his final collegiate game.
The Spiders finished head coach Dave Clawson's inaugural campaign at 3-8 overall, 2-6 in the Atlantic 10.
