UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Following a career-best 30 points that led Richmond to a season-opening 77-71 victory at Seton Hall on Friday night, the Atlantic 10 Conference honored Spider center Kevin Steenberge with its first Player of the Week award for the 2004-05 season.
Matched up against All-Big East center Kelly Whitney, Steenberge exploded for a career-night on 11-for-13 shooting from the floor and 8-for-13 from the free throw line. The 6-11 center also added eight rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in a career-high 32 minutes.
Steenberge's heroics were sealed with this sequence late in the contest. With the Spiders clinging to a one-point lead (72-71) with 31 seconds remaining, Steenberge corralled the rebound off a Seton Hall miss. After being fouled, Steenberge sank the first before missing his second attempt. However, Steenberge managed to grab the rebound before being fouled again. The Columbia, Md. native then knocked down two more from the stripe giving Richmond a comfortable 75-71 lead with 27 seconds to play.
Steenberge was joined in double figures by sophomore point guard Daon Merritt (19) who also added seven assists and junior Jermaine Bucknor (12) who missed a double-double by one board.
Richmond hosts Elon at 7 p.m. on Friday night in the 2004-05 home opener. On Sunday, the Spiders travel west to Charlottesville for a 1 p.m. game against Virginia. That contest will be televised locally on Comcast SportsNet.
