UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team enters post-season play this weekend as they are one of six teams competing in the 2004 Atlantic 10 Championships in Amherst, Massachusetts. The third-seeded Spiders face sixth-seeded Massachusetts on Thursday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m. in the tournament's opening game.
The Spiders (9-7-1, 7-4-0) are making their fourth consecutive appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championships after finishing third in the conference standings. Richmond has advanced to the title game in each of the past three years and captured its first conference championship in 2002. Last year as a #3 seed, the Spiders defeated Rhode Island and Fordham before falling to Dayton in the championship contest.
Four players lead the Spiders in scoring with seniors Meghan Ogilvie & Olina Vidarsdottir, junior Hillary Prince and freshman Ali LeVIne each tallying three goals. In addition, five other Richmond players have scored at least one goal.
Richmond and Massachusetts (7-10-0, 5-6-0) have met four times in the past and the Spiders have won every contest. In this year's regular-season meeting, Richmond recorded a 1-0 victory in Amherst. The teams have never met in post-season play.
The Minutewomen are led by freshman Britt Canfield, who has scored 11 goals this year.
If the Spiders win on Thursday, they will play #2 Rhode Island on Friday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m. The title contest will be held on Sunday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m.
