Richmond Women's Basketball Earns Preseason Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) and junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) were both named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference first team and All-Defensive team as announced today at the league's annual Media Day. The Spiders were picked to finish first in the conference's West Division, earning 24 of the 30 first-place votes cast by the league's head coaches and select media. In addition, sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) was selected to the third team.
At forward, Flavin led the team in six statistical categories and paced the conference in rebounding (9.1 rpg) last year. She ranked ninth in the country in field goal percentage (.592) and finished among the Top 50 players in the nation in both scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding. The 2003 Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team honoree currently ranks sixth in the Richmond record book for career points (1299) and fourth for rebounds (834). Earlier this fall, she was named a Street & Smith Preseason All-America honorable mention.
Chapman finished second on the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and led the team in assists (170) after starting all 33 contests at guard. She was honored to the 2003 WNIT All-Tournament team and the 2003 Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team after also pacing the team in made three-point baskets (67). Last year, in her first game in a Richmond uniform, she scored a season-high 29 points in the Spiders' season-opening overtime win over Delaware.
Campion, a member of last year's Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team, started all 33 games and scored in every contest. She led the team in rebounding on 11 occasions and recorded five double-doubles. The forward scored a career-best 18 points in Richmond's victory over cross-town rival VCU.
Third-year head coach Joanne Boyle lost just one starter from last year's squad that finished with a 23-10 overall mark and advanced to the semi-finals of the 2004 WNIT. The Spiders received five votes in this year's USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Richmond hosts Team Concept on Friday, November 12 in an exhibition game at 7:00 p.m. The Spiders open the 2004-05 season on Saturday, November 20 when Southwest Missouri State visits the Robins Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off time.
