Men's Basketball Bounces Francis Marion, 82-67, In Exhibition

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Jermaine Bucknor led five Spiders in double-figures, netting a game-high 24 points on 7-for-9 shooting, as Richmond defeated Francis Marion 82-67 in an exhibition game at the Robins Center.
On the strength of its outside shooting, Francis Marion raced out to a 27-17 lead with 9:34 to play in the first half. The Spiders used long-range triples and an inside presence from sophomore Gaston Moliva to spark a 17-2 run over the next five minutes that put the home squad ahead for good.
Bucknor's outside shooting in the first half (5-for-5) extended the lead to 46-37 at intermission. Solid outside shooting by the Patriots, who finished with 14 three-pointers, kept the visitors in the contest.
The Spiders proved too strong in the second half, extending their lead to a game-high 20 with 7:08 to play on a layup by senior Jamaal Scott. Scott finished the game with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). Richmond was 23-for-33 from the charity stripe (69.7 percent), while Francis Marion shot 3-for-6 from the line.
Senior Patrick O'Malley (15), Moliva (14) and sophomore Daon Merritt (12) were the other Spiders in double figures. Francis Marion's Louis McCullough scored 20 points and pulled down seven boards.
The Spiders open the 2004-05 season at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19 at Seton Hall. Richmond's home opener tips at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26.
NOTES: Bucknor's final line: 24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals ... Merritt dished a team-high five assists ... Rebounding was even (32-32) ... The Spiders converted 16 Patriot turnovers into 24 points ... Francis Marion's fifth-year head coach John Schweitz is Richmond's fourth all-time leading scorer (1,723 points) ... The Patriots, NCAA Division II, were 27-4 last year.
