UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Don't blink or you might miss the Spiders' final home game of 2004.
Richmond (3-3) welcomes the high-paced UAB Blazers (5-1) to the Robins Center on Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest. Jerry Wainwright and the Spiders will look to avenge last year's eight-point defeat in Birmingham.
Friday night's game is the third in a four-game stretch against 2004 NCAA Tournament teams. UAB and the Spiders' next opponent, Pittsburgh, advanced to the Sweet Sixteen last March.
STORYLINES
*The Spiders are 1-1 against UAB in the Robins Center. The Blazers captured the series' first meeting on March 20, 1989, in Richmond (64-61), but were defeated 72-68 on Dec. 4, 2002 in their most recent trip.
*The four contests in this series have been decided by 16 total points (4.0 margin per game). Last year's eight-point victory for UAB was the largest of the series.
*Richmond has won its last five games in the Robins Center dating back to last year. The Spiders most recent loss at home came on Feb. 10, 2004 against Xavier.
*Two fresh faces will appear in the Richmond line-up on Friday night. Redshirt freshman Andres Sandoval made his collegiate debut at VCU and notched seven rebounds and five assists to go along with two points. Washington State transfer T.J. Paterick is available for his first game in a Richmond uniform tonight.
*Richmond's streak of 232 straight games with at least one three-pointer was snapped when the Spiders went 0-for-6 at VCU. The last time Richmond failed to make a triple was Jan. 27, 1997 when UR defeated James Madison 75-65 despite going 0-for-9 from behind the arc.
*The Spiders are looking to avoid their third three-game losing streak in three years under Coach Wainwright.
