RICHMOND, Va. - The First Market Bank City Championship will be played under the bright lights of live television for the first time when WRIC-TV 8 broadcasts the annual men's college basketball clash between the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Spiders and Rams, both NCAA Tournament teams a year ago, resume their rivalry at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11 in the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Long-time TV8 sports anchor Chip Tarkenton calls the action while Richmond Hall of Fame point guard Greg Beckwith and former VMI and Furman coach Joe Cantafio offer analysis. Local broadcaster Robert Fish will host the pre-game, halftime and post-game festivities. The game will be a production of Ram Replay.
"We are pleased to partner with the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University and First Market Bank to present one of our community's great events," said Bob Peterson, WRIC's general manager. "We look forward to televising locally for the first time the First Market Bank City Championship basketball rivalry between the Spiders and Rams."
The Spiders defeated VCU 70-52 in last year's meeting at the Robins Center. The Rams captured the first two First Market Bank City Championships and hold a 34-24 lead in the all-time series.
