Track And Field Freshman Earns Rookie Of The Year Honors

KINGSTON, R.I.-Freshman Caitlin Smyth (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) earned Rookie of the Year honors, today, as the University of Richmond women's and men's track and field teams finished second and fourth, respectively, in the Atlantic 10 indoor track and field championships at Mackal Field House on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.
The women's team scored 147 points to earn their second-place finish. Leading the pack was Smyth with her gold medal in the 3000M at 10:12.86. Smyth also finished second in the Mile run at 5:06.24.
Sophomore Nicole Kurtain (Hamilton, N.J.) garnered a first-place finish in the Mile (5:04.27) and second in the 3000M (10:13.47). Both Smyth and Kurtain received a place on the First Team All-Conference list.
Other multiple top-three performances were garnered by Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) who was second in the 400M (56.36) and long jump (18-06.00), Ashley Bell (Glen Allen, Va.) who finished second in the triple jump (39-08.00) and third in the long jump (17-07.00) and Diane Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa.) who turned in a third and fourth-place effort in the shot put and weight throw, respectively.
With 84.5 points scored, the men jumped two notches and improved to a fourth-place finish led by senior Tim Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y.) who claimed All-Conference First Team accolades. Caramore crossed the finish line at 8:37.64 in the 3000M to claim his gold.
Senior Kevin Rhue (Virginia Beech, Va.) earned second-place in the Mile (4:13.55), third in his contribution to the distance medley relay (DMR) team (10:32.30) and fifth in the 1000M (2:31.19).
Other multi top-five performances included junior Clement Johnson (Bishopville, Md.) with fourth-place finishes in the 55M (6.51) and 200M (22.64), sophomore Ryan Mace (McKinney, Tex.) who finished fourth and fifth in the weight throw (6'5.75) and 55M (6.52), respectively and freshman Rusty Burrell (Lawton, Okla.) with contributed to the DMR and tied for fifth in the high jump at 1.91M.
The Spiders return to action Saturday, Feb. 28th in the UNC Last Chance Meet held in Chapel Hill, N.C.
