UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Josh Farkes' RBI single in the seventh inning scored the game-winning run, as the University of Richmond baseball team topped La Salle University 3-2 in the final contest of the Atlantic 10 series this afternoon at Pitt Field.
Senior A.J. Board went 2-for-2 to lead UR at the plate and four other Spiders contributed one hit a piece. Rich Prall tallied two hits and two RBI for La Salle.
The first run was registered when senior Board was hit-by-pitch and then scored on a double to left center by designated hitter Alex Wotring in the second inning.
The Explorers went ahead in the third inning when they posted two runs on three hits, but the Spiders tied the contest at two in the fourth. Board singled up the middle and later crossed the plate when third baseman David Thomas drew a walk with bases loaded.
In the seventh inning, shortstop Bobby LeNoir singled through the left side, stole second, advanced to third on a sac bunt by Thomas and then scored the winning run on Farkes' single.
Nathan Kuchta started on the mound for the Spiders and allowed only six hits and two runs, before Matt McLoughlin took over and recorded his second win of the season. John Cronin closed the game and posted his seventh save of the season. The right-hander is now tied in Richmond's all-time records for most saves in a season. Eric Ruhland took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
The Spiders are back in action this week when they face James Madison for a two-game series, Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday will be played in Harrisonburg, Va. and Wednesday is this season's final contest at Pitt Field, both days begin at 4 p.m.
