UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Five University of Richmond student-athletes were recognized by the Atlantic 10 Conference today as a result of their play in the year's opening contests. Sophomore Amanda Russell was selected as the Women's Cross County Performer of the Week while Hunter Willis was named Men's Cross County Rookie of the Week. Freshman Carrie Holland was named Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week and field hockey's junior Holly Cram and freshman Tara Kelly earned Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Holland, who has appeared in all three games, marked the opponent's top offensive player in the Spiders' contests against VCU and #8 Clemson. She limited last year's CAA Player of the Year Jen Parsons to three shots in Richmond's 2-1 victory over VCU on August 29 and held Clemson's preseason All-American Paige Ledford scoreless in the 1-0 loss to the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
In Richmond's season-opener against Monmouth on August 28, Cram (Glasgow, Scotland) netted four goals to tie the program's single-game mark for goals in a game. She currently leads the Spiders in scoring, averaging three goals per game and almost five points a game.
In her first collegiate game, Kelly (Gulph Mills, Pa.) scored three goals to help the Spiders break a single-game scoring record with 12 goals against Monmouth. After starting two contests, she currently ranks second on the team with three goals and her six points are third-highest.
Russell (North Bay, Ontario) finished first in the women's two mile race at the Spider Alumni Open on Saturday morning. She broke a meet record with a time of 11:04.8 and completed the course 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Russell helped the Spiders win both of the competition's duals topping VCU 15-51 and the Richmond Alumni 15-52.
Willis (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) placed seventh in the men's 5K competition at the Spider Alumni Open with a time of 15:54.6, more than a minute faster than his previous best. He provided Richmond with enough points to top the Spider Alumni 22-34 in one of two duals Saturday morning.
