UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond track and field team will begin the 2005 portion of its indoor slate Friday, Jan. 14, at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
The Spiders will be part of a 18-team field participating in Rector Fieldhouse on the Virginia Tech campus. Competitions are set to begin at 5 p.m. Friday and will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
Senior Brett Walton and sophomore Rusty Burrell will again be featured in a total of seven events this weekend. The Spiders will also boast a trio of distance runners in the 3000 meter race Saturday with freshmen Jonathan Molz, Peter Norquist and Hunter Willis. Each ran cross country in the fall as Willis was named the Men's Rookie of the Year winner following the season.
Walton competed in four events at the Lid Lifter Invit., last month including the long jump and shot put, events he is schedule to take part in this weekend. Burrell recorded a height of 6-04.00 in the high jump to finish 7th at the Lid Lifter Invit., and will look to improve on the mark.
The Richmond women, led by junior Danielle Eaton and sophomores Beth Crocus and Lindsey Smith, will vie for event crowns this weekend. Eaton placed third in the 800 meter competition last month at the Lid Lifter Invit., and is scheduled to the run in the same event Saturday.
Crocus and Smith finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Lid Lifter's weight throw event. Smith also tossed the shot put 41-00.00 to open the season with a fifth place finish in the event. Both are scheduled to take part in the weight throw Friday evening and Smith will also compete in the shot scheduled for Saturday morning.
Senior Ashley Bell also impressed in the long jump last month with a leap of 17-04.00 to take home sixth in Newport News, Va. The Glen Allen, Va., native will take part in the long jump at Virginia Tech scheduled for Saturday morning.
