CINCINNATI - Five Xavier players reached double figures, led by Brian Thornton's 15, as the Musketeers cruised to an 81-57 win over Richmond before 9,433 fans at the Cintas Center, an arena where the Spiders had won each of the past two years.
The visitors were paced by senior Jamaal Scott who scored 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Scott also had three of Richmond's six steals. Junior Jermaine Bucknor added 10 points, while sophomore Daon Merritt notched seven points and dished seven assists.
The Musketeers raced to an 8-0 lead in the first 90 seconds before Scott got the Spiders on the board with a layup. The Spiders closed to 12-10 on another Scott layup at 13:39 but that was as close as Richmond got the rest of the game.
With the score 20-16, three-pointers from Justin Doellman and Stanley Burrell gave Xavier a 10-point lead at 8:19. Doellman finished with 13 points and two steals. The Musketeers led 43-31 at the break. Richmond shot 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the field in the first half.
XU's Thornton scored his team's first nine points of the second half as Xavier built its lead to 19 with a 9-2 run in the first three minutes.
The Musketeers lead ballooned to 29 when Will Caudle converted a layup at 6:44.
Richmond junior Kevin Steenberge notched a career-high five blocks.
NOTES: Xavier now leads the all-time series 6-2 ... The Musketeers win snapped a five-game win streak for the visiting team in this series ... Merritt's seven assists is one off a career high he set at Wake Forest earlier this year ... Scott scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half ... The Spiders were out-rebounded for the sixth straight game.
