PITTSBURGH, Pa. - With 17 points and 15 rebounds, senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) led the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 61-50 win over Duquesne tonight at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Spiders improve to 15-3, 6-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Dukes lose their second consecutive league contest and fall to 7-11, 2-5 overall.
Flavin was rebound shy of recording a double-double in the first half alone with 13 points and nine rebounds at the break. Junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) scored 16 points, with 12 coming in the second half, and sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) tallied 13.
Richmond guard DeUnna Hendrix (Kokomo, Ind.) returned to court for the Spiders after missing seven games due to foot injury.
Duquesne was led by junior Aiga Bautre's 19 points. Junior Nicole Sinclair grabbed nine rebounds.
The teams exchanged baskets throughout the first three minutes before the Dukes built a six-point advantage after scoring on five straight possessions. The Spiders evened the score at 15 with 12:31 remaining and took the lead two minutes later off DeUnna Hendrix 12-foot baseline jumper.
The Dukes would hold the advantage just one more time before Richmond's defense limited Duquesne to just three baskets in a nine-minute span. The Spiders took a double-digit lead (10) with just under two minutes remaining and held a 38-30 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Richmond stayed in control, taking its largest lead (11) with 8:20 on the clock. Bautre scored nine points for the Dukes, cutting the deficit to four, but Duquesne committed two turnovers and missed four shots on their following possessions and the Spiders held on for the 61-50 win.
