Cincinnati, Ohio - The University of Richmond women's soccer team concluded its Ohio road trip with a 2-1 loss to the Xavier Musketeers in overtime, ending the Spiders' three-game unbeaten streak. Despite a 1-0 lead for the first 81 minutes of the match, the Spiders were unable to hold off the Musketeers offense for the full ninety minutes at Xavier University Soccer Complex. The Musketeers came from behind scoring in the last nine minutes of the match and then earned the game-winning goal in the first overtime period.
Richmond freshman Jessie Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) gave the Spiders an early lead just before the 20-minute mark when she drilled a free kick from 40 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced into the goal. Freshman Sarah Hilt was given credit for assisting Wolfe's fourth goal of the season and the Spiders' only goal of the match.
After almost 60 minutes of scoreless play, Xavier's Angie Scarlato brought the game to a 1-1 tie at the 81:56 mark after she knocked the ball into the corner of the goal, assisted by Kristen Ruehlman and Shawn Reynolds. Despite several shots by both teams, neither was able to put the ball in the back of the net before the ninety-minute mark and the exciting Atlantic 10 match-up extended into overtime.
As the first overtime period began, neither team was able to produce anything except for several fouls; however, after the first five minutes passed, Xavier's Sara Doutt found the back of the net with the game-winning goal and her fifth goal of the season off an assist by Scarlato and Christine Chuck, giving the Musketeers a 2-1 victory over the Spiders and improving them to 7-6-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Xavier outshot the Spiders 23-18 and Xaviers' Lindsey Cullins recorded 6 saves, while Richmond keeper Jessie Wolfe recorded three, and Jamie Zimmerman, Susan Boyer and Lindsey Reid ended with two shots each.
Despite the Spiders loss on Sunday, the Spiders continue to lead the series 3-2 after blanking the Musketeers 2-0 the past two years. In last year's contest, Hillary Prince (the Plano, Texas) scored both goals for the Spiders off of free kicks from 20 and 40 yards out.
The Spiders, now 4-8-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the Atlantic 10, entered Sunday's match after a 0-0 draw in double overtime with the defending Atlantic 10 champions, the Dayton Flyers where Richmond freshman Jessie Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) led the Spiders with four shots, while sophomore Kelly Kolker (McLean, Va.) made eight saves in goal while posting her second shutout of the season and the seventh of her career.
The Spiders have defeated East Carolina, Old Dominion and Atlantic 10 opponents Fordham and St. Bonaventure, in addition to tying UNLV, West Virginia and Dayton, and falling to James Madison, Oregon State, Florida Atlantic, Virginia, VCU, Duquesne, Saint Louis and, most recently, Xavier.
Wolfe currently leads the Spiders' offense in both points and goals, with four goals and ten points to her name. Trailing Wolfe are Holland with three goals and sophomore Susan Boyer (Paoli, Pa.) follow with one goal each.
The Spiders will now pack their bags for another road trip as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a first-ever match-up with new conference opponent, the Charlotte 49ers on Oct. 22.
