Saint Louis, Mo. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team was defeated in its second Atlantic 10 Conference match of the season on Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium in Saint Louis, Missouri. The Spiders, now 2-7-2 overall and 0-2-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, dropped a 3-1 decision in their first-ever match-up with the Billikens.
The Billikens acquired an early 1-0 lead over the Spiders less than two minutes into the first half when Saint Louis' Alex Twellman found an open net from 2 yards outside the goal, assisted by Cassi Winchell.
Following the early let-down, Richmond improved its efforts and freshman Susan Boyer (Paoli, Pa.) shot a ball from four yards out that found the left side of the net, earning her first career goal and catching the Spiders up to a 1-1 draw at the fifteen minute mark. Boyer was assisted by sophomore Ali LeVine (Avon, N.J.).
Unfortunately for the Spiders, the 1-1 stalemate did not last long. Only one minute after Boyer's goal, Saint Louis' Winchell, who was assisted by Maureen Hughes and Kelly Ferguson, hit the ball to the near post and earned a goal, giving the Billikens a 2-1 lead.
The rest of the first half remained scoreless, however, Saint Louis' Maureen Hughes found the back of the net from 12 yards out just four minutes into the second half, giving the Billikens a 3-1. Hughes was assisted by Twellman.
Richmond was unable to convert any more scoring opportunities into goals and ended the game with 11 shots versus Saint Louis' 9 shots. Richmond's keeper,, made one save for the Spiders compared to Saint Loiuis' keeper Amanda Martin's six saves.
The Spiders entered Sunday's match coming off a 1-0 loss to Duquesne in double overtime on Friday night and a 2-0 loss to city rival VCU on Monday night. So far this season, the Spiders have cleared victories with East Carolina and Old Dominion, tied UNLV and West Virginia and experienced losses to James Madison, Oregon State, Florida Atlantic, Virginia, VCU, Duquesne and, most recently, Saint Louis.
