University of Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team prepares for one last road trip of the season as it travels to Charlotte, N.C. this weekend to face the 49ers for the first time in history. The Spiders and 49ers will battle for an Atlantic 10 victory this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Transamerica Field.
Currently 4-8-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the Atlantic 10 with only three more regular season matches to go, Richmond is rounding out one of its most challenging seasons thus far. The Spiders enter Saturday's match after an Ohio road trip featuring a 0-0 tie with Dayton and a 2-1 loss to the Xavier Musketeers in overtime, which ended their three-game unbeaten streak. Freshman Jessie Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) scored the Spiders' only goal of the weekend after she blasted a free kick from 40 yards out that grazed the crossbar and dropped in. The Spider offense tallied 36 goals while Richmond keeper Kelly Kolker recorded 16 saves throughout the weekend.
New Atlantic 10 contenders, the 49ers are currently 8-7-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the Atlantic 10 and are coming off of four straight wins, including a victorious Atlantic 10 road weekend where they earned a 3-0 win over Xavier and a 1-0 win over Dayton. Freshman Nikki Dumencich and sophomore Nicole Labuda currently lead the 49ers with seven goals a piece so far this season, while sophomore midfielder Rachel Mees was just named to Soccer Buzz Magazine's Elite Team of the Week after scoring a pair of game-winning goals in Charlotte's victories at Xavier and Dayton.
The Spiders have defeated East Carolina, Old Dominion and Atlantic 10 opponents Fordham and St. Bonaventure, in addition to tying UNLV, West Virginia and Dayton, and falling to James Madison, Oregon State, Florida Atlantic, Virginia, VCU, Duquesne, Saint Louis and, most recently, Xavier.
Wolfe currently leads the Spiders' offense in both points and goals, with four goals and ten points to her name. Trailing Wolfe are sophomore Carrie Holland (Pittsfield, Mass.) with three goals and sophomore Ali LeVIne (Avon, N.J.) and Hillary Prince (Plano, Texas) with two goals each. In addition, seniors Annette Isham (Denver, Colo.), Susan Darrah (Morrison, Colo.), sophomore Christine Wrublesky (Langhorne, Pa.), and freshman Susan Boyer (Paoli, Pa.) follow with one goal each.
Although the Spiders' chances for competing in the Atlantic 10 Championship are slipping further away, head coach Peter Albright continues to push his team to excellence. "I am sure that the team will continue to fight and make our supporters proud of our effort and spirit," stated Albright. "We will keep battling and never settle for less than greatness, however hard it is to acquire or however long it takes."
