RUTHER GLEN, Va. - University of Richmond freshman Tim Courtney (Midlothian, Va.) is tied for seventh at 4-under par as the Spiders are tied for ninth after two rounds of the Mattaponi Springs Collegiate Shootout played Monday.
The third and final round of the 54-hole tournament will be played on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. at the Mattaponi Springs Golf Club.
As a team, the Spiders are in a three-way tie for ninth with Missouri and UNC-Wilmington at 8-over par 584. Tulsa leads the event at 10-under par 566, followed by Kent State (-9), Xavier (-7), North Carolina (-2), East Tennessee State (+2), Virginia Tech (+3) and Maryland (+4).
"The guys settled down and played better in the afternoon," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "This is a very strong field and we are looking to get off to a fast start tomorrow and make up some ground."
Courtney shot a 2-under par 70 in each of the two rounds played Monday on the par-72, 6,911 course. He is seven strokes off the leader in the clubhouse, Wake Forest's Kyle Roberts (-11). Courtney finished the 36-hole day with eight birdies and 24 pars.
"Those are two outstanding performances for a freshman, especially in just his second collegiate event," Decker said of Courtney's two sub-par rounds.
In five collegiate rounds, Courtney has shot under par three times and even par once.
Sophomore Jordan Utley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 28th after finishing the day at 2-over with back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 73. Utley also birdied eight holes on the day.
Freshman David Feeley (Phoenix, Md.) sits in a tie for 39th at 4-over par after rebounding from a morning round of 76 to shoot an even-par 72 in the second round. Junior John Pelet (Atglen, Pa.) shot an even-par 72 in the afternoon round to stay at 6-over par through two rounds which has him in a tie for 53rd. Senior Tyler Randol (Lawrence, N.Y.) carded a 2-over 74 in the second round and is tied for 60th at 8-over par heading into Tuesday's final round.
Wake's Webb Simpson is one stroke back at 10-under, followed by a three-way tie for third at 7-under par between Xavier's Jason Kokrak, Kent State's Jarrod Page and UNC-Wilmington's Marshall Pickett. East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies is in sixth-place at 5-under, one stroke ahead of a three-way tie for sixth between Courtney, Tulsa's Ryan Henry and VCU's Manuel Relancio.
