ORLANDO, Fla. — With its entire lineup firing rounds of par or better, the Richmond Spiders men's golf team shot a 7-under par in Round 2 of the Atlantic 10 Championship Tuesday. Richmond's score, the low round of the day by six strokes, shot the Spiders into a tie for second with VCU at 1-over par (577). The Spiders and Rams trail only George Mason (3-under 573) in the 12-team field.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron sank an eight-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to shoot 69 (-3) and grab a one-shot lead atop the individual leaderboard at 7-under par (137). Rizo-Patron is one shot in front of VCU's Carson Looney and at least four shots clear of the rest of the field. Richmond's last medalist at a conference championship was Danny Pizetoski in 2014.
Carson Baez followed his opening 75 (+3) with a 3-under 69 Tuesday and is now tied for 12th at even par (144). Baez carded four birdies and a single bogey while shooting 15 spots up the individual leaderboard.
Baez is one shot behind teammate Quin Polin, who is tied for eighth at 1-under par (143) after a 1-under 71 Tuesday. Polin, a junior, used four birdies to offset a double bogey on the eighth hole and a bogey on the 16th hole.
Junior Jack LaPiana played his final 15 holes in 3-under par to shoot 72, a nine-shot improvement from his Monday score. LaPiana is tied for 40th at 9-over par (153).
Senior Drew Carlin, subbed into the Spiders lineup prior to Round 2, responded with an even-par 72, two-and-a-half shots below his season average entering Tuesday. Carlin made three birdies, three bogeys, and 12 pars.
Richmond's 38 birdies through two rounds are the most of any team in the field.
The Spiders will be paired with VCU and George Mason in Wednesday's third and final round, with groups going off the first tee beginning at 8:15 AM.
