University of Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team rounds out their 2005 season as they battle the Massachusetts Minutewomen in their season finale today at 1 p.m. at First Market Stadium. The Spiders, coming off a huge 1-1 tie in double overtime with the undefeated Rhode Island Rams, are looking to continue their almost two-season unbeaten-at-home streak (since August 2004 against James Madison) with a victory over the Minutewomen.
The Spiders enter Sunday's match on a high after putting an abrupt end to Rhode Island's four-game winning streak on Friday night as they battled the Rams to a 1-1 stalemate in double overtime at First Market Stadium. The Spiders, now 4-9-4 and 2-4-2 in the Atlantic 10, celebrated their senior night in dramatic fashion when senior Annette Isham scored the game-tying goal with just 2:08 left in the match.
The Minutewomen are now 8-8-1 and 5-3-0 in the Atlantic 10 and are coming off a 2-0 victory over Charlotte on Friday night.
Sunday will be the sixth meeting between the Spiders and the Minutewomen with the Spiders owning victories in all five matches of the series, including the Spiders' pair of shut-outs (1-0) over the Minutewomen last year in the regular season match-up where Meghan Ogilvie scored the only goal of the game and the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championships after Whitney Sikes scored for the Spiders.
Both the Spiders and the Minutewomen have a lot riding on Sunday's match. The Spiders hope to conclude their season with a victory and continue their home field unbeaten streak, while the Minutewomen are hoping for one last win to help slip them into the running for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championships.
"Massachusetts is having a great year and they have a lot to play for," stated Richmond Head Coach Peter Albright. "I think it will be a great game."
