University of Richmond, Va. - University of Richmond freshman midfielder Jessie Wolfe was named the Atlantic 10 women's soccer Co-Rookie of the Week for the second time this season following two standout performances last weekend against Rhode Island and Massachusetts. A native of Germantown, Md., Wolfe played a major role in all three of the Spiders' goals last weekend, either assisting or scoring the goals.
Wolfe assisted Annette Isham's game-tying goal in the last two minutes of regulation time in the intense battle with undefeated Rhode Island on Friday night that ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Wolfe then scored the only two goals of the game and her fifth and sixth of the season in the Spiders' 2-0 victory over Massachusetts on Sunday - the first, she headed into the net off Sarah Hilt's corner kick just five minutes into the game giving the Spiders an early lead; the second, she drilled from approximately 40 yards out and found the upper right corner of the goal just 4 minutes into the second half. Wolfe led the Spiders in shots (five) against Massachusetts on Sunday and tallied three shots in the drawn out battle with Rhode Island on Friday night.
Wolfe shares this honor with Fordham freshman forward Katie Sanchez from Flushing, N.Y. Sanchez scored the lone goal of the match in Fordham's 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Oct. 28 and added her sixth goal of the season on Oct. 30 in the Rams' 1-1 tie with Temple. Her 16 points are the third-highest single-season total by a freshman in program history.
The Spiders concluded their season last weekend, 5-9-4 and 3-4-2 in the Atlantic 10, with Wolfe leading the team in points (15), goals (six) and shots (64) for the season, in addition to being tied for first in assists (three). She received Rookie of the Week honors earlier this season and was named to the VCU/Eurosport Invitational All-Tournament team.
Richmond Head Coach Peter Albright was extremely proud of Jessie's performance this past weekend and her overall play throughout the season. "Jessie has emerged as one of the top midfielders in the A-10," stated Albright. "Her range and power combined with her "soft feet" have made her a great addition to our team. She has become a real leader."
