Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team earned its second Atlantic 10 victory this weekend with a 4-2 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in Sunday's match at First Market Stadium. The Spiders improve to 2-2-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference after Richmond's Carrie Holland, Hillary Prince and Annette Isham each scored a goal for the Spiders.
The Spiders took a 1-0 lead early on in the game after a St. Bonaventure player scored an own goal just seven minutes into the match. St. Bonaventure's Heather Macdougall brought the game to a 1-1 tie after she ripped a shot just inside the 18 that found the back of the net.
The Spiders and the Bonnies headed into the second half at a 1-1 stalemate after Richmond keeper Kelly Kolker (McLean, Va.) made the play of the game, saving a one-on-one chance at the end of the half.
"Kelly's save was huge," stated Richmond Head Coach Albright. "She wills us. Kelly makes plays that she shouldn't be able to make. Her save was decisive--who knows what would've happened if they got a 2-1 lead over us before halftime."
The game remained tied for the first 20 minutes of the second half until something clicked for the Spiders and they decided it was time for battle. Pouring their hearts into every play, the Spiders finally earned their second goal of the game after Carrie Holland crossed the ball to Annette Isham (Denver, Colo.). Isham then put the ball in the back of the net, giving the Spiders a 2-1 lead.
Minutes later, after Hillary Prince (Plano, Texas) took a free kick that blasted past the Bonnies' goalkeeper.
Carrie Holland (Pittsfield, Mass.) then ripped a shot that soared past the Bonnies keeper to bring the Spiders to a 3-1 lead. Albright commended Holland not only for her beautiful goal, but also for her excellent game overall.
"Carrie was so productive and created great chances for herself and the team." This was Holland's third goal of the season, putting her as the team's co-leader in goals and points.
Just as the game was ending, Richmond had one last letdown as St. Bonaventure's Heather MacDougall earned her second goal of the game with just 0:34 remaining on the clock, closing the game to a 4-2 victory for the Spiders.
Sunday's match ended with the Spiders recording 22 shots versus the Bonnies' eight. Richmond's Kolker came up with five saves throughout the game and St. Bonaventure's Lisa Eberhart ended with six saves to her name.
Despite the Spiders' second consecutive win, Coach Albright was not completely satisfied with the way his team performed in Sunday's match. "We finally picked it up in the last twenty minutes and scored two really good goals as a result of good play and good team decisions," stated Albright. "Our two wins this weekend (Fordham and St. Bonaventure) were really important wins for us to get back into the running for the Atlantic 10 playoffs."
The Spiders, now 4-7-2 overall, have defeated East Carolina, Old Dominion, and, most recently, Fordham and St. Bonaventure, in addition to tying UNLV and West Virginia and falling to James Madison, Oregon State, Florida Atlantic, Virginia, VCU, Duquesne, and Saint Louis.
Freshman Carrie Holland currently lead the Spiders' in both points and goals, each with three goals and eight points to their name. Sophomore Hillary Prince both trail Wolfe and Holland with two goals each. In addition, seniors Annette Isham, Susan Boyer (Paoli, Pa.) follow with one goal each.
The Spiders will continue conference play when they travel to Dayton on October 14 to take on the Flyers for their eighth-ever meeting. Dayton leads the series 5-2 after defeating Richmond the past two years, including the Spiders 2-1 loss to then ranked No. 27 Dayton at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio last year.
