Richmond Head Coach Jermaine Bucknor) we don't win the game. Jermaine was terrific. Our defense was good and I thought we made some tough plays down the stretch that enabled us to win the game."
On the play of the backcourt:
"For being around and knowing what our situation is I thought (the backcourt) was fair. The problem came when we crossed halfcourt. It happened when we tried getting ball to a guard. It was nowhere near good enough. They can really put pressure on you. That team is going to win a lot of games."
Richmond Junior Peter Thomas
On the new Richmond system:
"It is a new system and we are still learning a lot. We had been working against man and zone and they were switching, going from man in the full court to zone in the halfcourt. That was kind of confusing for us and we hadn't really worked on that. It was just somewhat tough to get going offensively tonight."
On the Hampton's defensive pressure in the backcourt:
"We had some turnovers late when they really turned the pressure on. They surprised us a little. After the first couple of times we figured out to throw over the their guards. We could hit Kevin (Steenberge) in the middle or throw it over the top to Jarhon (Giddings)."
On taking the charge with six second remaining in the game:
"They had been running a play to try to get Granger the shot. They would hand off to him going over the top to get shots. They faked the hand off and I saw it early and I was able to step baseline and was lucky enough to be there and get the charge."
Richmond Senior Jermaine Bucknor
On connecting offensively late in the game:
"It was the first game of the season and it is always a challenge to run your system against different guys, when you are so used to running against your own team. We got some open looks in the first part of the game, but fortunately the guys kept coming back to me when I had open looks in the second half and I was able to knock them down. Once you feel good, you just feel good."
On the new Richmond system:
"In this offense you get so many open looks and it is hard to turn them down because you get so many early. In last season's offense we had to take the first open look we had. Now it is hard to turn them down early in the shot clock. What we are trying to work on now and in practice is trying to get through the offense and not taking the first shot everytime. We maybe get through it for a second open shot or maybe a back cut. It is working out."
Hampton Head Coach Bobby Collins
On the game:
"I thought our assistant coaches did great job of scouting this team. We were totally prepared to guard against the Princeton type offense. I understand they do a lot of backdoors and a lot of screens. It worked at times. We wanted to stretch the floor and put a lot of pressure on their backcourt. I thought we did a good job of that, especially at the end of the game. We could have easily rolled over, but our guys fought and gave us a chance to win the game."
Hampton Guard Jeff Granger
On his play down the stretch:
"We are never out of it and coach always tells us if there is time on the clock then there is still time to play. I stayed aggressive and coach kept telling me to shoot the ball. We always talk about 2-for-1 and after I made the lay-up I felt my stroke was there to hit the shot."
