Track & Field Opens Season At Liberty Collegiate Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The University of Richmond men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2005-06 indoor season on Friday at the Liberty Invitational.
Freshman Jessica Young set a new school record in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash in 7.63 seconds and then improved upon that time in the finals of the event (7.55) to take first place. She also finished fourth in the 400 dash in 1:01.60.
Fellow freshman Jasmine Major ran a personal best time of 8.93 seconds to win the 60-meter hurdles and finished third in the 60 dash in 7.81 seconds.
Seniors Danielle Eaton (2:18.63) and Amy Thesing (2:19.52) finished first and second respectively in the 800.
Senior Diana Morse won the mile run in 5:26.54 and freshman Lisa Sinkovitz placed third in 5:33.76.
Junior Lindsey Smith finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 40-9 3/4 and junior Beth Crocus finished sixth with a heave of 39-5 3/4. Crocus also finished fifth in the weight throw at 48-6.
Freshman Angelene Cicero took fifth in the 60 hurdles in 10:36, while freshman Marissa White took sixth in 10:50. Senior Kaitlyn Ryan finished fifth in the high jump, clearing 4-11.
"This was a good start for our team," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said. "It was a great opportunity to see the team compete for the first time this season. We know where we need to work and we know, technically, the aspects of each athletes events that need the most focus. The next six weeks are going to be critical."
On the men's side, junior Paul John ran a personal best time of 9:00.48 in the 3,000, his first race in 22 months after having surgery. Junior Rusty Burrell had a strong performance in the high jump, clearing 80-1 1/2.
Richmond returns to action on Jan. 20 at the CNU Invitational in Newport News, Va.
