UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's basketball team returns to action after a nine-day layoff for exams when the Spiders host Old Dominion on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
Richmond returns to the Robins Center after playing four-straight games away from home. The Spiders are 3-1 in the Robins Center and 4-4 overall.
This is the second-straight game against a Colonial Athletic Association team for the Spiders, who spent 17 seasons as a member of the conference. Richmond lost to Virginia Commonwealth on Dec. 10.
This marks the first time Richmond has played Old Dominion since the 2000-01 season, the Spiders last as a member of the CAA. It's also the first time Richmond has played more than one CAA opponent in a season since 2000-01. The Spiders have three CAA opponents on their schedule this season as they also host William & Mary on Dec. 31 in the Robins Center.
The Spiders continues to struggle offensively as they learn the Princeton-style offense under first-year head coach Chris Mooney. But Richmond has played tough defense through its first eight games, leading the nation in fewest points allowed as it has held opponents to 48.5 points per game. The Spiders have held all eight of their opponents to under 60 points, the longest such stretch since the 1946-47 season.
Old Dominion enters the game with a 7-2 record coming off an 87-43 victory over DePaul, the Demon Deacons worst loss in school history. The Monarchs had scored just 41 points in a 62-41 loss to Drexel in its previous game, but rebounded in strong fashion Saturday.
Richmond has won the last four meetings between the two teams and six of the last eight, but Old Dominion holds a 26-19 advantage in the all-time series.
Tuesday's game is the first of two visits from 2005 NCAA Tournament teams to the Robins Center. Nationally-ranked Wake Forest comes to town Thursday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
