NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Quincy Davis scored 20 points to lead Tulane to a 64-41 victory over Richmond in the Green Wave's first game back in its home city on Tuesday night.
The game drew an energetic crowd of 1,682 to cozy, on-campus Fogelman Arena and the cheers even drowned out the referees' whistles at one point.
Matt Wheaton added a career-high 13 points for Tulane (3-6), which was displaced to the campus of Texas A&M for early-season practices and games because of damage done to New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.
"This is just what we needed. We needed to be home in the friendly confines of our arena, in our city and at our school," said first-year Tulane coach Dave Dickerson. "This is only one game, but its a special game for our school and our players."
Tulane became the first team this season to score 60 points against defensive-minded Richmond (5-6), which came into the game allowing 50.9 points per game.
Jarhon Giddings led Richmond with 13 points.
Tulane used a 13-0 run to close out the first half with a 34-16 lead.
The Green Wave then held Richmond to just five points in the first 11:41 of the second half.
Davis scored eight points during that same span as Tulane built a lead as large as 48-21.
"We need him to play well. Our players look for him," Dickerson said. "For him to have 20 points and shoot 8-of-13 is a good start."
The Spiders hit four three-pointers in the final eight minutes, but could not get closer than 20 as Richmond finished the game shooting only 29 percent from the field. Tulane hit 47 percent of its shots and outscored Richmond 19-4 from the free throw line.
Following the game, Dickerson took the public address microphone and thanked the fans, stressing that "we are all in this together, rebuilding this city and saving this university."
