UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Association of USA Track and Field, (USATF) in conjunction with the University of Richmond Track and Field offices, sponsored a one day Track and Field Officials Certification Clinic on the Spiders campus, Jan. 30.
The purpose of the clinic was to prepare interested individuals in the proper conduct of Intercollegiate (NCAA), High School (NHSF) and USATF Association track and field competition for the 2005 season. The classes covered the fundamentals of track and field officiating, rules changes from all venues and points of emphasis. Many of Virginia's top qualified officials were in attendance along with new members of the organization.
Bill Boyd organized the event, while Vernon Clement and Joe Showker served as instructors. Even with marginal weather in the Richmond area Sunday morning there was a large turnout.
"The weather caught us three instructors short," Boyd said. "I want to thank Vernon and Joe for coming `front and center' and doing a great job. A very special thanks goes to Coach Steve Taylor of the University of Richmond for the excellent facility. It was a great meeting with many good exchanges of information."
"This is a great event and an excellent opportunity for the University of Richmond and our track and field program to meet with officials outside of the competition arena," Taylor, whose program hosted the event for the second-consecutive year, said. "The wealth of track and field knowledge here today is somewhat amazing. We feel it's critically important to provide a forum for a clinic like this to occur on our campus. Without these men and women we could not do what it is we love to do... and that is coach our athletes to compete at their highest level. They provide us with a positive environment for our athletes to compete in a fair and level arena of competition. We hope in a small way to say `thank you' for everything they do for our sport. On behalf of our coaching staff and University we look forward to making this an annual event."
