Spiders Wrap Up Action At Virginia Tech Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The University of Richmond track squad brought home a total of nine season bests in the second day of action at the Virginia Tech Challenge, Saturday, Feb. 12 in Blacksburg, Va. The Spider men set five personal records while the women recorded four personal bests at the meet held in the Rector Indoor Track and Field Complex.
Junior Nicole Kurtain garnered the first of four individual season bests, running a mile time of 5:06.50. The Hamilton, N.J., native placed 11th in the event and was eight seconds faster than Richmond's previous best in 2005 of 5:14.60.
Junior Danielle Eaton and freshman Diana Morse took home two of the Top-15 places in the 800 meter. Eaton ran a season and team best 2:16.65 to place ninth and Morse came in 13th with a season best time of 2:17.88.
Junior Amanda Russell picked up a seventh-place finish in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:08.32. The North Bay, Ontario, native ran the event for the first time this season and was almost four seconds faster than Richmond's previous season best of 10:12.88.
Senior Ashley Bell competed in the long jump and recorded an 11th-place finish with a length of 18-05.25 (5.62m). Sophomore Lindsey Smith, who failed to record a distance in yesterday's weight throw, finished 13th in the shot put with a toss of 40-06.75 (12.36m).
Junior Ryan Mace came back after running the 55 meter yesterday to compete in the 200 meter. The two-sport athlete recorded a season-best time of 22.63. Freshmen Adedayo Oladejo (23.58) and Travis Warren (24.07) also ran the 200 meter sprint.
Junior John Ciccarelli improved on his team best mile time this afternoon. The South Bury, Conn., native ran a 4:21.74 to place 14th in the event.
Freshman Ryan Jobes, who placed eighth yesterday in the 500 meter, wrapped up the meet for the Spiders by recording a team and season best time of 1:59.70 in the 800 meter.
Richmond heads to Kingston, R.I., next week to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships. Single-day meet action is scheduled to begin early Saturday morning, Feb. 19. Logon to www.RichmondSpiders.com for a recap and results of all the A-10 meet action.
