Women's Basketball Falls to George Washington 63-47

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season as the University of Richmond women's basketball team fell to George Washington 63-47 this afternoon at the Robins Center. The Spiders fall to 18-5, 9-3 in the Atlantic 10 and the Colonials improve to 16-7, 9-3 in the league.
Flavin led the Spiders with 19 points and 11 rebounds and four steals. She was the only Richmond player to score over five points and scored eight of the Spiders' 15 field goals.
Senior Anna Montanana scored a game-high 20 points for the Colonials. Senior Jessica Simmonds and sophomore Kenan Cole also reached double-figures in the scoring column with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
George Washington jumped to a quick 9-0 lead as the Spiders missed their first five field goal attempts. Richmond got on the scoreboard at the 16:40 mark with two free throws from sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.). The Colonials took their first double-figure lead (11) three minutes later off a jumper from Montanana.
The Spiders cut the deficit to single-figures with just under five minutes left in the half, but were outscored 10-4 in the remaining minutes and George Washington held a 33-19 lead at the break. Flavin was the only starter to hit a field goal in the first half.
In the first half, George Washington scored 14 points off the Spiders' turnovers while Richmond was unable to capitalize on its opponents mistakes.
In the second half, the Colonials took their largest lead of the game (21) at the 5:46 point.
47 points is the least amount of points that a Richmond team has scored under head coach Joanne Boyle.
Richmond shot a season-low .273 from the field, the first time this season that they have shot under .300. In addition, the Spiders recorded a season-low eight assists.
The Spiders held a 40-39 edge in rebounds.
This is the ninth straight time that George Washington has defeated the Spiders.
Richmond hosts La Salle on Thursday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. The Spiders will honor their seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
