Women's Soccer Announces Signings

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond women's soccer head coach Peter Albright announced today that six players will join the Spiders for the 2005 season after signing National Letters of Intent. The six players, Ashleigh Blumer, Susan Boyer, Katy Hudson, Melanie Varga, Jessie Wolfe and Jamie Zimmerman, hail from four states and received numerous honors throughout their high school careers.
"The signing of this class represents a bold step forward for the Richmond soccer program," Albright said. "This recruiting class is entering with high expectations and each of these players has the talent and high level playing experience to impact the program."
Blumer, a defender from Manassas, Virginia, was a four-year starter at Forest Park High School and earned All-District and All-Area honors the past two seasons. She anchors the backfield for the BRYC Attack, currently the top-ranked club team in Virginia which has won 18 straight games, including three major tournaments. In addition, Blumer is a four-year member of the Virginia ODP team.
From Paoli, Pennsylvania, Boyer was a two-time All-League defender for Conestoga High School. She has played for the Eastern Pennsylvania ODP team for five years and played on the ODP Region I team in 2003. Boyer plays left back for the Penn Strikers, who are ranked 18th in the nation.
A goalkeeper from Clarksville, Maryland, Hudson led River Hill High School to the 2004 County and Regional Championships after posting a save percentage of .967 and recording ten shutouts. She was named to the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun All-Met first teams and All-County teams as she allowed just five goals all season. Hudson also plays in the net for the Maryland ODP team and the RFC Milan club team, a perennial Region I power.
A native of East Meadow, New York, Varga served as team captain last year for East Meadow High School. She earned All-Conference, All-County and All-State honors and was also a member of the Region I Eastern New York ODP team. She currently plays striker for the Albertson Express, the #1 U-18 girls club team in the nation.
Wolfe, a midfielder from Germantown, Maryland, received All-State honors the past three seasons while playing at Damascus High School. Her club team, the Damascus Spirit, advanced to the finals of the Maryland State Cup for three straight years and her Maryland ODP squad captured the 2004 Regional Championship.
The reigning 2004 Hartford County Player of the Year, Zimmerman led John Carroll High School to an undefeated season and a State Championship. The White Hall, Maryland native received NSCAA All-State and All-South honors after leading the team in points the past two years. During her career, Zimmerman tallied 44 goals and 57 assists. She plays for the RFC Milan with Katy Hudson and her Maryland ODP team won the 2004 Region I Championship.
The Spiders open the 2005 season on August 26 when they face James Madison at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational.
