Women's Basketball Tops Massachusetts 55-43

AMHERST, Mass. - With 15 points, junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) led the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 55-43 win over Massachusetts at the Mullins Center this afternoon. The Spiders start their three-game road trip with a win and improve to 20-5, 11-3 in the A-10 while the Minutewomen drop their third straight and fall to 13-12, 6-8 in the league.
Chapman hit a trio of three-point baskets and went 6-9 from field goal range to score a game-high 15 points. Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) also reached double-figures with 12 points. Sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) and DeUnna Hendrix (Kokomo, Ind.) led the Spiders in rebounding with nine and eight, respectively.
Massachusetts was led by Tamara Tatham's 12 points.
The Spiders built a 9-2 advantage five minutes into the game as Chapman connected on a three-point basket from the top of the key with one second remaining on the shot clock. On the Spiders' following possession, junior Ania Grabias (Bilgoraj, Poland) hit another trey to put Richmond ahead by eight points.
Massachusetts went three minutes without scoring a basket and Richmond held a double-figure lead with a pair of free throws from Flavin at the 9:36 point. The Minutewomen ended the scoring drought ten seconds later as leading scorer Pam Rosanio hit her first basket of the game.
Massachusetts scored just two more baskets during the rest of half and Chapman gave the Spiders a 29-15 lead at halftime after Richmond gained possession with 4.8 seconds left and she drove the length of the court for a lay-up as time expired.
In second half action, the Minutewomen twice cut the deficit to 11 points but could get no closer as the Spiders left with the 55-43 win.
Richmond faces Xavier on Friday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m.
