Women's Basketball Tournament
First Round - March 20, 2005
Gampel Pavilion - Storrs, Conn.
Head Coach Joanne Boyle
Opening Statement
"My hat goes off to Florida State. We watched a lot of tape on them. I felt like this was one of the better games I've seen. All the credit goes to them. They stepped up and played really well in the first round of the tournament. We didn't take anything away from them. I'm proud of my team for getting here. I think the next step for us is to win a game in the tournament. Kate has set a precedence for this team and hopefully they will carry that forward next year."
What did you tell the team at halftime?
"I tried to tell them to relax and come out. They (Florida State) shot the lights out but I was really disappointed at haw we handled the ball in terms of turnovers and rebounding. They are such a good team that if you do get a stop you just can't give them a second chance. The disappointment in my team wasn't the execution it was that we gave them easy lay-ups and second chance points. So I tried to stress that throughout the time outs too. Credit goes to Florida State because they are so good at what they do."
Senior Forward Kate Flavin
How did you feel going out onto the court and what were you expecting?
"I really didn't even know what to expect going out there. I had only practiced three days but this has been a dream of mine so I got the chance to go out and play. I'll never forget this and I'm happy that I was given the opportunity to play and I'll never forget it. I'm happy that I got those eight minutes and I will remember them always."
On her knee
"It just wasn't there. They just did a back door cut and it just wasn't the same. I didn't know if I was helping my team out at all so you might as well get somebody healthy in there and see if they could do something."
Was it worth it?
"Definitely. Looking at the box scores you might not agree but it was a great experience and it wouldn't have been the same not being able to step on the court with my teammates."
Junior Guard Saona Chapman
What do you take upon yourself as a point guard to do when you lose your leading scorer?
"It's been tough for our team to just develop a whole new mentality the last three games without her and not knowing what we were going to get today. It's really tough because she brings so much to this team out on the court so really maybe we've depended on her a lot. I know I have. She just leads us in every way on the court and to lose a player like that is a major set back for our team. Being tournament time, there's not really too much time to develop a game plan. There's a lot more I could have done as far as encouraging the younger girls a little bit more but it just comes and goes so fast. I'm just really happy that Kate worked her butt off to get out there today. I'm happy that she got to play in this game."
On Florida State's shooting
"They shot the lights out today. Shot two's and three's right off the bat. In the second half they just kept going. You work and work and when they throw up a shot it's just so disappointing. Good job to them for shooting the lights out but I think there's a lot more our defense could have done."
