WASHINGTON, D.C. - University of Richmond junior Alison Mitchell (Annandale, Va.) scored a career-high 13 points tonight as the Spiders fell to George Washington 63-44 in the semi-finals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championships. Richmond drops to 23-7 while the Colonials improve to 22-7 and face Temple in the title contest tomorrow evening.
Mitchell was the only Spider player to score in double-figures, her first 10+ point game this year, and finished the game 6-of-8 from the field. Six other players contributed points for Richmond with sophomores Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) and Kelly Roche (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) leading the group with seven each.
Three players scored in double-figures for George Washington as senior Anna Montanana paced the team with 16 points.
After Richmond held a slight edge in the first three minutes, George Washington rattled off eight unanswered points to take a 12-5 lead just three minutes later. A free throw at 10:07 point brought the Spiders within one but the Colonials held onto the lead until Roche hit a three-point basket to tie the score at 17 with six minutes left.
Mitchell scored the Spiders' final two baskets, both short jumpers in the paint, of the half but George Washington held a 25-23 edge at the break.
The Colonials took a ten-point lead just three and a half minutes into the second half as Richmond committed three turnovers and three fouls during that span. The Spiders scored their first four points off free throws and did not connect on a field goal until the 13:36 point. From the ten minute mark on, the Colonials held a double-digit lead and took their largest lead (22) with a three-point basket from Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Kimberly Beck.
The Spiders shot under .300 for just the second time this season, ending the night at .295. In addition, Richmond recorded a season-low six assists.
