CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Richmond baseball squad managed only five hits Tuesday night in Charlottesville, Va., while Virginia pounded out 11 runs on 13 hits to top Richmond 11-0. The loss drops the Spiders to 15-24 on the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 32-15 overall.
Richmond got off to a rocky start in the bottom half of the first when freshman Brian Alas gave up a leadoff double then walked Matt Street. With runners at first and second and no outs Ryan Zimmerman tripled to the gap in right-center scoring both runners. A sac-fly, single and stolen base followed before the second out was made in the inning. Mike Campagna drove in the fourth run of the inning with a two-out single then scored as Kyle Werman, who drove in one run with a base-knock, got caught in a run-down to end the inning.
Alas worked out of a jam in the second. The `Hoos singled with one out then stole second, but failed to score when Alas struck out Zimmerman and got Brandon Guyer to groundout.
Virginia posted its final five runs in the third on just three hits. Alas walked one with one out then gave up consecutive singles and a sac-fly for the first run. After a walk loaded the bases, Alas hit a batter and gave up a three-run double to Sean Doolittle.
Richmond's offense could not break through, failing to move a runner past second the entire game. Junior Ben Zeskind walked to leadoff the game, but after a groundout moved him to second he was stranded by junior Andrew Justice.
Sophomore Anthony Sandstrom walked with two outs in the second and moved up a base on a single by freshman Austin Reilly. Freshman Hank Coogan then ended the inning by grounding into a fielder's choice.
The Spiders' only other threat came in the sixth when freshman Joe Mahoney doubled down the left field line, but failed to move to third as three of the next four were retired.
Richmond continues its two-game road trip Wednesday evening, May 4, in Blacksburg, Va., against Virginia Tech. First pitch against the Hokies at English Field is slated for 7 p.m.
