Spider Field Hockey Announces 2005 Schedule

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After making its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004, the Richmond Field Hockey squad will begin its 2005 journey in just over two months. Head coach Ange Bradley announced her team's 2005 schedule, Friday, which includes four NCAA Tournament qualifiers as well as three-time defending National Champion Wake Forest.
The Spiders kick the season off Aug. 27 when they host American, the first of four 2004 NCAA participants, at Crenshaw Field. The following day, Aug. 28, Richmond returns to the turf and welcomes Radford for a 1 p.m. contest.
The Spiders' first road contests come Sept. 3-4 at the Blue Hen Classic in Newark, Del. Richmond will square off with Ohio State in the tournament's first day then play the host team Delaware in the tourney's final contest. The Blue Hen's qualified for postseason play last season with a 15-6 mark.
Richmond will remain on the road for its next two, including a 4 p.m. tilt with cross-town rival VCU, Sept. 9. Two days later the Spiders travel to Towson, Md., to face the Towson Tigers at noon.
Bradley's squad returns to Crenshaw Field Sept. 18 to host the Tribe of William and Mary at 1 p.m. The team's journey returns to the road Sept. 21 for a game at James Madison.
A tough string of contests await the Spiders when they return from Harrisonburg, Va. Richmond first hosts Old Dominion, an NCAA team from a year ago, Sept. 24 then travels to Winston-Salem to face Wake. The Demon Deacons have won the last three NCAA Championships, but trail in the all-time series with the Spiders, 5-3-1.
The following weekend, Richmond opens Atlantic 10 play by hosting UMass (Oct. 7) and Rhode Island (Oct. 9). The Spiders have swept through the last three conference regular seasons and A-10 Championships. The current sweep has resulted in 19-straight conference regular season wins dating back to 2001 and 24-straight wins against conference opponents since 2002.
After hosting the Rams, Richmond will welcome St. Joseph's and Temple to Crenshaw Field on the weekend of Oct. 14-16. The Spiders then hit the road for their final four regular season contests.
The journey takes them to La Salle, Oct. 21, then to West Chester Oct. 23. The Spiders will face in-state rival Virginia in Charlottesville, Oct. 26, to continue its road-swing. The Spiders have won the last three against the 'Hoos, but trail in the all-time series 4-17-1.
Richmond then ends the regular season at A-10 newcomer St. Louis, Oct. 30, in a 1 p.m. game.
The Atlantic 10 Championships, hosted by Temple, are slated for Nov. 4-5 in Philadelphia, Pa. The A-10 winner must then take part in the NCAA Play-in game scheduled for Nov. 15. The NCAA Tournament's field of 16 will begin play Nov. 19-20, and the NCAA Finals will take place Nov. 25-26.
