Charlottesville, Va. -
Sunday was a disappointing day for the University of Richmond's women's soccer team. Although the Spiders were able to hold off Virginia's attack for the first 25 minutes of the game, it was only a matter of time before the 13th-ranked team in the nation overcame the Spiders' efforts to seize a 9-0 victory.
The Cavaliers put the heat on the Richmond defense and scored four goals within a matter of just 10 minutes. The first of the four goals came at the 25-minute mark when Virginia's Kelly Quinn tucked the ball into the back of the net off a cross from Jess Rostedt. Less than three minutes later, Sarah Huffman and Becky Sauerbrunn assisted Ariel Thompson with her third goal of the season, bringing the Cavaliers to a 2-0 lead over the Spiders. Five minutes later, Rostedt scored her third goal of the season with an assist by Shannon Foley and then proceeded to score again less than two minutes later, this time assisted by Huffman, leaving the Spiders at a 4-0 deficit at halftime.
The Cavaliers out-shot the Spiders 13-0 in the first half with Richmond keeper, Kelly Kolker coming up with 8 saves. Going into the second half with a four-goal lead over Richmond, Virginia kept the game in their attacking half of the field, denying the Spiders of any threatening shots throughout the entire game. Kate Hudson took over the Richmond goal for the second half, saving two shots while allowing the ball in the back of the net five times.
Virginia midfielder Jen Redmond, assisted by Sarah Curtis, scored her first goal of the season just seven minutes into the second half. Virginia's Alli Fries took a long shot that met the back of the net, giving Virginia a 6-0 lead.
With just five minutes left in the game, Virginia, now 5-2-1, found the back of the net three more times for a final score of 9-0. Virginia's Ariel Thompson brought the Cavaliers to a 7-0 lead with a goal assisted by Alli Fries. Just three minutes later and with less than three minutes left in the game, Virginia`s Kara Frederick slipped two more balls into the back of an empty net for the Cavalier`s eighth and ninth goals of the night.
Richmond, now 4-2-1, will play at city-rival VCU on September 26 at 7pm.
