University of Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond's women soccer players are picking up their heads after a disheartening loss to Virginia last Sunday and are preparing for an upcoming match with city-rival, VCU. The Spiders, now 2-4-2, will play the VCU Rams on Monday, September 26 at 7pm at the Sports Backers Stadium.
The Spiders are coming off a big 1-1 tie with then ranked No. 20 West Virginia where freshman Jessie Wolfe found the back of the net with a header off of senior Hillary Prince's free kick just four minutes into the game. The Spiders then experienced an extremely disappointing 9-0 loss to Virginia last Sunday. The Spiders have worked hard all week to pick up the pieces and improve their game to give the Rams a run for their money.
Richmond freshman Jessie Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) currently leads the Spiders in both points and goals, with three goals to her name. Sophomores Carrie Holland (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Ali LeVIne (Avon, N.J.) trail Wolfe with two goals each and senior Susan Darrah (Morrison, Colo.) and sophomore Christine Wrublesky (Langhorne, Pa.) each follow with one game-winning goal.
The Rams, now 2-3-3, are coming off of a big 2-0 victory over Colonial Athletic Association rival, James Madison, this past Saturday.
This will mark the tenth time that the Rams and Spiders have faced each other. The Spiders lead the all-time series, 6-2-1, including victories the past two years. Richmond earned a 2-1 triumph over VCU in last year's contest at First Market Stadium after Whitney Sikes scored the game-winning goal in the last minute of the contest.
After facing VCU, the Spiders will start their conference play when they hit the road to Duquesne for a match on September 30.
Despite the Virginia game setback, coach Peter Albright remains optimistic about the season and looks at it as a learning opportunity for the team.
"I believe that the players now know what we are capable of and have a higher expectation of what our responsibility is to the team, the school and the game. We will prepare hard for a skilled and savvy VCU team and then set off in our quest of a conference championship. Today is Day 1 and next Monday is our biggest game. I expect a great game," stated Albright.
