Pittsburgh, Pa. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team concluded their first Atlantic 10 Conference match of the season with an unfortunate outcome in double-overtime on Friday night. The Spiders fell 1-0 to the Duquesne Dukes in Pittsburgh, Pa. in the last six minutes of play.
Scoreless through the first 104 minutes, Duquesne sophomore Emily Sedgwick stole a Spiders pass near mid-field and lofted it over the defenders with fellow sophomore Audra Mathews sprinting toward the goal. Mathews gathered the pass and beat Richmond keeper Kelly Kolker for the victory.
Kolker made five saves for the Spiders versus Duquesne's keeper Virginia Bondi's six saves while the Spiders' offense came up with 8 shots versus the Dukes' 13.
The Spiders entered Friday's match coming off a 2-0 loss to city rival VCU on Monday night. So far this season, the Spiders, now 2-6-2 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, have cleared victories with East Carolina and Old Dominion, tied UNLV and West Virginia and experienced losses to James Madison, Oregon State, Florida Atlantic, Virginia and, most recently, VCU and Duquesne.
Duquesne now 6-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, came into the match after suffering a 1-0 loss in double-overtime to St. Francis last Sunday. The Dukes have earned victories over Jacksonville, Vermont, Alabama A&M, Army and Cleveland state, while tying Niagara and suffering losses to St. Francis and conference opponent Saint Louis.
Although the Spiders have defeated the Dukes in the four consecutive years prior to Friday's performance, the Spiders were unable to pull off a fifth series victory. Last year, the Spiders blanked the Dukes 2-0 after Carrie Holland (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Christine Wrublesky (Langhorne, Pa.) each scored a goal at First Market Stadium.
Richmond freshman Carrie Holland (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Christine Wrublesky (Langhorne, Pa.) follow with one game-winning goal each.
The Spiders will now travel to Saint Louis for a Sunday face-up with the Billikens for the first time in the program's history.
