Richmond's seven wins heading into conference play are the most for the Spiders entering Atlantic 10 play since joining the league for the 2001-02 season. Richmond's 7-6 (.538) record is the best winning percentage entering conference play since the 2000-01 season. The seven victories ties the 2003-04 NCAA team, which went 7-5 in non-conference play, for most non-league wins since 2000-01.
The win gave Richmond it's 299th victory in the Robins Center. The Spiders are 299-144 (.675) in 34 seasons in the building. The Spiders will go for their 300th win in the building on Saturday when they host La Salle at 7 p.m.
The Spiders scored a season-high 74 points, eclipsing their previous season high of 62. Richmond also posted season highs in field goals (30), shooting percentage (.577), 3-point percentage (.538), assists (21) and points in the paint (42).
This was just the second time through 13 games that Richmond had three players in double figures for scoring. Seniors Jermaine Bucknor and Kevin Steenberge each scored 17 points, while junior Peter Thomas had 11.
Richmond allowed 60 points for just the second time through 13 games this season, but has held 12 of its 13 opponents to 60 points or less and has not allowed a team to reach 65 points.
The Spiders still lead the nation in fewest points allowed, holding teams to 52.5 points per game.
Richmond is 3-1 when seniors Bucknor and Steenberge both score in double figures with the lone loss coming in the near upset of then No. 5 ranked Louisville.
Thomas missed his first career double-double by one assist, finishing with 11 points and a career-high nine assists, to go with just one turnover.
Richmond hit seven 3-pointers in the game, giving the Spiders at least seven 3-pointers in the last five games. Richmond has made 39 treys in the last five games.
Bucknor hit three 3-pointers for the second-straight game, going 3-of-5 from behind the arc and 6-of-8 from the floor. Bucknor is 6-of-9 (.667) from 3-point land over the last two games and has now hit multiple trifectas in nine of Richmond's 13 games this season. He has connected on at least three treys in six games and scored in double figures in nine games.
Red-shirt freshman Jarhon Giddings continued his 3-point shooting tear, going 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Giddings is 8-of-14 (.571) over the last three games.
True freshman walk-on Duncan McLean played 24 minutes, scoring a career-high five points, dishing out two assists, grabbing two offensive rebounds and a steal. McLean made 2-of-3 field goals, including his only 3-pointer. He leads the team in 3-point percentage, shooting 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from behind the arc.
This was the second time this season Richmond has won back-to-back games. The Spiders have not won three-consecutive games this season.
Longwood was the sixth in-state team Richmond played this season, the most since its last year in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Spiders went 4-2 against teams from Virginia this season.
