UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior guard Araceli Gil tied the school record for the most three-point field goals made in a single game as she shot 7-8 from the three-point line to lead the Spiders to a 66-40 victory over the Fordham Rams on Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center. While Gil earned 21 points off her career-high seven treys, senior guard Ania Grabias hit 6-8 from the field to record her first collegiate double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds as the Spiders improved to 8-11 and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10.
The Rams, who only scored six first-half points against the Spiders in last year's contest, came out and put the first two points on the board; however, the Spiders answered with a 10-2 run that gave them a six-point lead. Shortly after, the Spiders more than doubled the Rams' score after Amber Petillon hit two consecutive baskets, followed by a basket by Grabias.
After a three-minute dry spell in which neither team could sink a shot, Fordham's Jada Jefferson hit her third shot of the game to break the stalemate. The Spiders then followed with a 13-2 run, which included back-to-back three pointers by Gil, giving the Spiders an 18-point advantage. Richmond's Saona Chapman then added seven consecutive points to give the Spiders a 24-point advantage, the Spiders' largest halftime lead of the season.
In the second half, the Spiders jumped up to a 31-point lead, the largest lead of the game. At the 5:09 mark, Gil hit her seventh three-pointer of the game, the most three's that any Spider has hit since Michelle Florin on Dec. 19, 1998, tying the school record.
"She's phenomenal," stated Richmond head coach Michael Shafer of Gil. "We were in a losing streak and she told me that she just had to do more, and she did. Gil deserves and earned that record. Everyone is so proud of her."
While Gil and Grabias notched in double-figures, Sarah Williams added nine-points after tying her career-high three treys and Petillon scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.
Jefferson and Stacey Price paced the Rams with 14 points each, followed by Lisa Carrol who added 11 points as the Rams dropped to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the A-10.
"Our team played well defensively, which led to nice opportunities on the offensive end," commented Shafer. "We showed that we are capable of performing; it just takes effort like this every time we play."
The Spiders will now hit the road for their first-ever showdown with A-10 newcomers, the Charlotte 49ers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday night at the Halton Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
