UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's basketball team, in the thick of a wide-open Atlantic 10 race, hosts Charlotte on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
Richmond is 10-8 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10, having won five of their last seven games. The Spiders, who played 11 of their first 17 games at home, are now in a stretch where they play just one home game in a three-week span.
This will be Charlotte's second visit to the Robins Center, but first as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The two teams have met three times, with Charlotte winning two, but the Spiders won the last meeting in 2002, 64-60 in overtime.
The Spiders had their three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday at Rhode Island (11-6, 5-1 Atlantic 10), but have had a week off to prepare for Charlotte.
Richmond is second in the nation in scoring defense, holding teams to 53.3 points per game, just behind Air Force (53.2). Richmond has held its last four opponents to 58 points or less and has yet to give up more than 67 points in a game this season. The Spiders have only allowed over 60 points twice this year and have held eight opponents to 50 points or less. One of those teams, Seton Hall, scored 83 points in a win over No. 15 ranked N.C. State on Wednesday night.
The Spiders are 8-1 when Bucknor makes at least three 3-pointers, 8-0 when they score 58 points or more, 10-0 when they lead with five minutes to play and 8-1 when they lead at the half.
Charlotte has won 10 of their last 14 games, after starting the season 1-3. The 49ers have dropped two of its last three games to Xavier and George Washington. De'Angel Alexander leads the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game. Curtis Withers is second in scoring (15.2 ppg) and leads in rebounding (10.8 rpg).
The Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC) Food Drive for the University of Richmond will be held at this weekend's home men and women's basketball games in the Robins Center. The food drive is looking for non-perishable food items to be donated to the charity America's Second Harvest, which has a local food bank here in Richmond, The Central Virginia Food Bank. There will be barrels situated around the Robins Center for the men's basketball game against Charlotte and the women's basketball game against George Washington on Sunday at 2 p.m.
SunTrust Mortgage Fan Zone tickets will be available beginning 90 minutes before tip-off and are just $5 and include a free sandwich coupon from Chick-Fil-A. At halftime, enjoy the annual Mascot Game, featuring mascots of teams and businesses trying to hoop it up on the court. Following the game, pick up your Spider Trading Cards, brought to you by McDonald's, and get them signed during an autograph session featuring Spider players.
