UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After finishing the 2005 season with a No. 8 national ranking, I-AA.org National Coach of the Year, Dave Clawson and the defending Atlantic 10 Champion Spiders will be looking for continued success in 2006, beginning Sept. 2 in Durham, N.C, against the Atlantic Coast Conference's Duke Blue Devils. The 2006 schedule, announced Monday by the Richmond Athletic Department, features six home contests to be played at UR Stadium.
"Coming of an Atlantic 10 Championship we know every week will be a great challenge," head coach Dave Clawson said. "We are excited to have the opportunity to play six games at home. Each year we also enjoy the opportunity to schedule quality I-A opponents from great conferences, and in 2006 we have that in Duke from the ACC."
After visiting Duke, Richmond will have a bye week before facing 10-straight games to close out the regular season. To open the string of 10-straight, the Spiders welcome VMI to UR Stadium, Sept. 16, as part of Family Weekend. Richmond, which topped the Keydets, 38-3, in 2005, has won the last five and 16 of the last 19 in the all-time series against VMI.
After VMI, the Spiders will host Bucknell, Sept. 23, then open the Atlantic 10 portion of their season by hosting Northeastern, Sept. 30.
October 7 marks a match-up of the 2005 defending Atlantic 10 Champions when the Spiders hit the road to face New Hampshire, a team, along with Richmond, which advanced the quarterfinals of the 2005 NCAA I-AA Championships. Richmond holds an all-time mark of 9-7 against the Wildcats, winning the last meeting in 2003 by a score of, 35-23.
The Spiders will venture north for a second-straight week, Oct. 14, to take on the Rhode Island Rams in Kingston, R.I., before returning home to host two straight A-10 games. The first will see Delaware come to town, Oct. 21.
James Madison will serve as the Spiders' homecoming opponent, Oct. 28. Richmond, which holds a 14-10 mark all-time against the Dukes, spoiled JMU's homecoming last season, 18-15, when the Dukes were ranked No. 17.
"To have six games at UR Stadium is a great opportunity for our team," Clawson added. "We have not had six home games by design in one season here at Richmond since 2002."
Richmond then closes out the final three weeks of the season with two road games and a single home contest. A trip to Villanova, Pa., to face Villanova will take place Nov. 4, followed by Senior Day at UR Stadium, Nov. 11, against Towson. The Spiders then wrap up the 2006 regular season as they have the past four seasons, with the oldest rivalry in the South and the fourth-oldest rivalry in all of college football, at William & Mary, Nov. 18.
Game times for all contests are still being determined, and season-ticket info will be available in the coming months. Check back at www.RichmondSpiders.com for game time listings and updates on season-ticket packages and information.
