UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Jen Ruhe led the Richmond women's soccer team to its first victory of the season as she notched the game-winning goal and an assist in the Spiders' 2-1 victory over the Temple Owls on Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium.
"Jen has made a big influence in every game we've played this season," said head coach Peter Albright. "She plays with a relentless energy and she deserved the game-winner today. We were looking for a hero and she stepped up."
Although scoreless in the first half, the Spiders had several close opportunities, missing the goal by just inches.
Less than 15 minutes into the game, Ruhe maneuvered through two defenders at the touchline, before she took the ball towards the goal to beat another defender in front of the box. Ruhe then launched a shot that sailed just over the goal.
The Spiders then missed another opportunity with ten minutes left in the half as Jessie Wolfe got her head on the ball and blasted it just to the left of the goal post.
Richmond broke the stalemate in the 73rd minute of action as freshman Nora Mann found the back of the net after receiving a pass across the box from Ruhe that she was able to knock to the left of the Owls' keeper.
The Owls responded with the equalizer less than eight minutes later as Kersha Walker chipped the ball from the left side to teammate Elena Hekimian who then headed the ball past the Richmond keeper.
Just over two minutes later, Richmond took a 2-1 advantage as Ruhe received the ball from Anne Hazel and beat her defender down the left sideline for her first collegiate goal and the game-clincher.
Richmond's Kate Hudson registered six saves in goal for the Spiders, while Liz Tarasevich recorded four saves throughout the contest for Temple (3-8-0, 0-2 in A-10).
"We still have a lot of work to do, but I'm proud of the team," stated Albright. "We didn't give up. I'm most proud that we didn't give up after we gave up the goal. We showed a real resolve to finish the game."
The Spiders (1-8-2, 1-1 in A-10) will continue A-10 action next weekend as they travel to Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Pa. to face George Washington on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and La Salle on Sunday at 1:00 p.m..
