SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Eric Ward threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Richmond beat Rhode Island 31-6 on Saturday.
Ward completed 12 of 20 passes for 125 yards and rushed for 48 yards on six carries, including a 9-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.
Tim Hightower paced all runners with 99 yards on 16 carries for Richmond (5-1, 2-1 Atlantic 10).
Rhode Island (2-4, 0-3) marched 74 yards in six plays in taking a 6-0 first quarter lead on Marcel Roberson's 36-yard touchdown reception from John Butler.
The Spiders gained a 7-6 advantage with 8:51 remaining in the first half when Ward threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Matt Hale, capping a 14-play, 82-yard drive.
Andrew Howard's 25-yard field goal with 44 seconds left in the half gave Richmond a 10-6 halftime lead.
The Spiders increased their lead to 17-6 when Ward connected with Arman Shields on a 20-yard scoring strike with 11:06 to go in the third quarter.
David Horton returned an interception 20 yards five minutes into the third quarter, upping the Spiders' lead to 24-6. Butler completed 4 of 10 passes for 64 yards with one interception in the loss.
