UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team battled through its fifth overtime loss of the season as it fell 2-1 to the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday night at First Market Stadium in just their second ever meeting.
"It's amazing," stated Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "I've been here 11 years and that was one of the best games we've played. I can't believe we lost."
The Spiders and the 49ers (9-4-2 overall, 4-1-0 in the A-10) played through a scoreless first half, with Richmond putting the pressure on, holding a 6-3 shot advantage.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Richmond broke the stalemate as sophomore Ashleigh Blumer received a ball from teammate Ali LeVIne, and ripped a shot from over 25 yards out that sailed over the keeper's head. Blumer's first goal of the season put the Spiders up 1-0 at the 55:04 mark.
Charlotte's Rachel Mees then assisted Rachel Baer on the equalizer at the 76:46 mark as Baer received the ball and took on her defender on the right side and slid the ball past the Spider goalie to knot the game, 1-1.
Richmond poured on the pressure in an attempt to get the game-winner, coming close on several accounts. Jessie Wolfe blasted a shot that hit the crossbar with just over four minutes left of play and then Jen Ruhe had a break-a-way in the last two minutes that was stopped by the Charlotte keeper.
Neither the Spiders nor the 49ers were able to convert their chances and the teams headed into overtime where Charlotte was able to get the game clincher in just under five minutes. Kelsie Ornsby headed the ball to Ashley Rex who then served the ball in to Mees for the score. Mees collected the loose ball in front of the goal and knocked it in to capture the 49ers second straight A-10 victory.
"I thought the girls were exceptional," continued Albright. "This really is an amazing team. With this record, the fight that they give and the consistent application of effort is amazing. I thought Chris (Wrublesky) was fabulous - this was one of her best games. And Susie Boyer played their national player off the field."
The Spiders (1-11-2 overall, 1-4-0 in the A-10) will resume league play next weekend as they head to New York to face St. Bonaventure on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Fordham on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
