PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior John Pelet tied for fourth to lead the Richmond men's golf team finished fourth at the Big 5 Invitational on Sunday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Pelet shot a 6-over-par 148 for the tournament, carding rounds of 1-over 72 and 5-over 76 under tough conditions on the par-71, 6,834-yard course. His fourth-place finish tied a career-best and was his third-career top-5 finish.
The defending champion Spiders were tied for the lead after an opening round 295, but shot a 312 on Sunday to finish at 607, three strokes behind second place finishers Georgetown and Pennsylvania. Columbia won the tournament at 591.
"This is a tough one, hopefully it will serve as a learning experience for us," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "It was great to get ourselves in a position to win, we'd like to do that as much as possible. Hopefully next time we can capitalize."
Richmond freshman Hunter Townsend tied for 10th at 9-over 151 (74-77), while junior Jordan Utley tied for 27th at 157. Utley had the lead after an even-par 71 and was coming off a tournament victory at the Joe Agee Invitational, but shot 83 on Sunday.
Richmond junior Billy Hanes tied for 37th (78-79=157) and sophomore Grant Rafield tied for 55th (81-80=161).
The Spiders wrap up the fall season next Monday and Tuesday at the Charlotte 49er Collegiate Classic at Cabarrus Country Club.
