Spiders Fire to Third Place Finish at Virtues Intercollegiate

NASHPORT, OHIO — The Richmond Spiders appeared to be in midseason form at the season-opening Virtues Intercollegiate, firing a 9-under 279 in Sunday's final round to finish the 12-team event in third place at 18-under par (846).
Richmond's Round 3 score equaled the 16th lowest round in team history and pushed the Spiders to 18-under par, trailing only Miami (Ohio) at 22-under par and Michigan at 31-under par on the leaderboard.
"It was a great week for the Spiders," said coach Adam Denton. "The key to our success will be patience and playing with maturity. The squad is talented and if we can play smart golf the results will take care of themselves."
Senior Jack LaPiana led Richmond at 9-under par (207), tied for third in the field of 87 golfers. It was LaPiana's first career top-three finish, and his 54-hole total of 9-under par matched the 13th best individual tournament score in program history. He led all players by playing the par 4s at Virtues Golf Club in a combined 5-under par during the event.
"I'm really proud of Jack," said Decker. "He fought through a few tough holes, showed great resilience, and led the way for us."
Grad student Mason Deal placed seventh in his Richmond debut, firing rounds of 70-68-70 to finish at 8-under par (208). It was the first career top-10 finish for the transfer from Toledo.
"Mason gave us a a wonderful effort this weekend. He is an outstanding addition to the roster and a true team player," said Decker.
Freshman Davis Conaway collected a top-20 finish in his first career start, tying for 17th at 1-under par (215). "It was a great start for him," said Decker of Conaway. "He showed us a lot of good things and proved to be a steady presence out there."
Senior Quin Polin battled back from a triple bogey on his first hole Sunday to play his final 17 holes in 6-under par and finish the event at an even-par 216, tied for 19th.
Senior Parker Moellinger tied for 32nd at 4-over par (220) after an even-par 72 Sunday.
The remaining two members of Richmond's roster competed as individuals at the event. Senior Tyler Lee tied for 63rd at 15-over par (231), and junior Tommy Sharps tied for 75th at 20-over par (236).
"It was a really fun week with the entire team here and I'm excited to keep working hard to prepare for the next event," said Decker.
The Spiders will return to action at the RedHawk Intercollegiate in Pittsburgh, Pa. on September 14-15.
